Craig Long Scholarship

In June 2017 we lost a very important member of the Des Moines hockey community.

Craig Long, who is the father of Oak Leafs head coach Scott Long, rarely missed a game over the years as these two teams faced off when Scott was a player with the Capitals all the way through Scott becoming coach of the Oak Leafs. Craig always enjoyed seeing all the faces that he had grown to know and loved the thought of catching an exciting hockey game.

Craig was involved with Des Moines youth hockey dating back to the late 80s when his son got involved in the program as a player. And over the years, he logged many hours as a coach, board member, and most importantly Scott's #1 fan.

The Capitals and Oak Leafs players on the ice today can give credit to the dedicated efforts of Craig’s efforts as a hockey dad and to Scott Long as director of DMYHA for helping them in developing their skill and love for this wonderful game.

The Long family wished to carry Craig's name on in such a way that he will be remembered for years to come. In Craig Long’s honor, the Des Moines Youth Hockey Association annually gives a $1,000 scholarship each to a graduating Capitals and Oak Leafs player.

The Scholarship is awarded to that senior displaying on/off-ice leadership, spirit of competition, loyalty to team endeavors and sportsmanship.

The scholarship is awarded each year at the last game that the Oak Leafs and Capitals face each other for the season on the ice in between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games. The scholarship has been presented to the players by Craig’s grandchildren Avary, Brooklyn, Jacob, Emma, Brody and Hudson.
